Parenting Wisely Program Helps Families

Parenting is not an easy job for anyone. When you have a child with special needs it can be even more challenging.

“Sometimes I felt overwhelmed with trying to raise my son well and address his needs effectively,” shared Renée Frisson.

Her son, Sebastien, has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). “I’ve tried to find resources and activities that could be helpful for us in working with different behaviors and issues that come up surrounding that,” she said.

Because of you, we are able to provide great programs to help families like Renée and Sebastien, including the Parenting Wisely program offered through our Cortland Prevention Resources division.  The program helps families improve communication and decrease conflict by teaching them effective strategies that have been proven to reduce school and homework problems, delinquency and other problem behaviors, family conflict and also lessen drug and alcohol abuse in youth.

“When I received the flyer about the Parenting Wisely program, I wondered if it could be helpful,” Renée said. “Mary Dykeman was incredible leading the program and in the way she was able to connect authentically with kids and parents alike and show us how to work with many challenges.”

Just like Renée, many parents are looking for help. They struggle to deal with family issues.

“The program is so important in helping us work through our challenges and learn the best ways to communicate and connect with each other,” shared Renée.

Because of you, we can offer evidence-based programs that have been proven to be successful and result in positive outcomes. Your support allows us to offer the Parenting Wisely program for free, including a nutritious family dinner at each session. Thanks to you, we can tailor our programs to meet the individual needs of the participating families.

“The fact that they offer dinner with the program is a great help to those of us who work and don’t have a lot of time to squeeze that in before the program,” shared Renée.  “For me, the time of day (evening) that it’s offered is ideal.  My mom, who’s an important part of our family was also welcomed into the program and found it very helpful,” she added.

In addition, Sebastien has received services through one of our school-based mental health clinics. “Family Counseling Services offers many programs and resources to our community that support so many family needs – in my case, offering guidance and opportunities for our family to grow together and develop a happier, healthier home and lifestyle.”

With support from people like you, Renée and her son were able to access the programs and supports they needed to strengthen their family.  You have been part of their success and your support allows us to continue this important work.

“I just want to thank them for supporting such an important resource to our local community”
