Staff from Cortland Prevention Resources, Cortland Area Communities that Care and the SUNY Cortland Counseling Center joined forces to promote the Majority Rules Campaign during the SUNY Cortland 3rd Annual Red Dragon Pride Day to encourage smart party habits by students.
The Majority Rules Campaign uses student data gathered from the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment to raise awareness that most students do party smart. According to the Health Assessment, the majority of SUNY Cortland students use harm reduction strategies when or if they drink alcohol. A core message of the campaign is that “8 out of 10 SUNY Cortland Students Party Smart.”
Party Smart has four core strategies:
1) Eat before drinking;
2) Drink water before, during and after;
3) Have a designated driver; and
4) Stay with friends.
Over 400 students stopped by the Majority Rules table and received free T-shirts, water bottles, cups, and enjoyed ice cold mocktails. Given that it was over 90 degrees, the students were happy to have a cold drink.
The merchandise had reminders for students to stay with friends, eat food, drink plenty of water and have a designated driver when drinking alcohol. The event helped demonstrate that even non-alcoholic beverages can be fun. The red color was a perfect way for students to show their school spirit!
Want to make your own delicious mocktail? We used ginger ale, cranberry juice, lime juice, and lemon slices.
